Early treatment for bunion pain can help prevent surgery. However, if you suspect you need surgical care or want a second opinion before bunion surgery, we’ve put together some frequently asked questions about bunions to help you make an informed decision.
At our Seattle foot and ankle clinic, we approach bunion treatment by 1) determining the cause of the bunion pain and 2), helping to avoid further damage to the joint. In the majority of cases, pain can be eliminated and the joint protected without having to do bunion surgery. This is especially true if early treatment is sought.
If you need bunion surgery, we consider this as a last resort, but our surgeons have some of most advanced training in the region. Both Dr. Huppin and Dr. Hale have been named Seattle’s Top Doctors and are experts in bunion surgical care. Our approach to bunion surgery includes educating patients and helping to determine the right surgical procedure. This will depend on foot type, severity of the deformity, activities, and symptoms.
Conservative therapies, such as foot orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist, have been shown to control abnormal foot mechanics and prevent the need for surgery. Orthotics that conform as close as possible to the arch of the foot— known as Total Contact Foot Orthotics—are a highly effective, conservative option.
